Tensions Rise Over Bologna Bombing Remarks

Published: 2024-08-04

Tensions have escalated between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Paolo Bolognesi, president of the Association of Victims' Families, following remarks made during the 44th anniversary of the Bologna train station bombing.

Bolognesi criticized Meloni for not acknowledging the neofascist roots of the attack, which killed 84 people in 1980. He emphasized that his statements were based on court rulings and urged Meloni to review the historical context.

In response, Meloni expressed her dismay at the accusations against her government, stating that the victims should not be overshadowed by political disputes.

The anniversary ceremony included tributes to the victims, with family members recalling the tragic loss of their loved ones, including Mauro Alganon, who was just starting his summer vacation when the bomb exploded.
