Investigations into the support network of late mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro have uncovered a web of complicity within the healthcare system.

Authorities in Palermo are probing several medical professionals, including Antonino Pioppo, a prominent ophthalmologist, for allegedly aiding the fugitive.

Pioppo is accused of signing prescriptions under false identities, including Denaro’s alias, and is under investigation for aggravated aiding and abetting.

Other implicated doctors reportedly expedited medical procedures and provided covert assistance during Denaro’s cancer treatment.

The inquiry highlights how Denaro exploited healthcare connections during his 30-year evasion of justice.

Police have conducted searches in Palermo hospitals as part of the ongoing investigation.
