In a significant development, former prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone is under investigation in Caltanissetta for allegedly covering up mafia-related inquiries from 1992. The investigation focuses on connections between Palermo mafia figures Antonino Buscemi and Francesco Bonura and the group led by Raul Gardini.
Pignatone, who has held prominent roles in various Italian prosecutorial offices, including Palermo, Reggio Calabria, and Rome, appeared for questioning on July 31. Alongside him, former prosecutor Gioacchino Natoli and Guardia di Finanza General Stefano Screpanti are also being investigated.
The allegations suggest that Pignatone and his colleagues may have conspired to suppress crucial evidence related to mafia activities, particularly following the murders of prominent anti-mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
