A major investigation in Italy has led to the arrest of 36 individuals, including Nicola Salvati, the regional treasurer of the Democratic Party (PD) in Campania.
Salvati, a former deputy mayor of Poggiomarino, is accused of being part of a criminal network facilitating illegal immigration.
Authorities allege the group created fake documents and used complicit companies to help over 2,000 migrants obtain residency permits in exchange for large sums of money.
The operation, conducted by the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza, also uncovered corruption involving public officials.
Salvati has been suspended from his party role, pending further investigation.
The case highlights systemic abuse of immigration laws in Italy.
