In a sweeping anti-corruption operation, police in Northern Italy have dismantled a network involving public health department employees, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

The investigation, centered in Piacenza and extending to Parma, Pavia, and Lodi, has led to 16 individuals being investigated for corruption, extortion, and falsification of public documents.

The scandal erupted after a serious workplace accident in Piacenza revealed that safety certifications were being traded for gifts, such as fine wine and Serie A football tickets.

These certifications, crucial for workplace safety compliance, were manipulated to benefit businesses facing safety issues.

The operation, involving over 50 police officers, uncovered a complex system where public employees exploited their positions for personal gain, undermining workplace safety standards.
