In a significant political development in Italy, over half a million citizens have signed an online petition calling for a referendum to repeal the Calderoli law on regional autonomy.
This milestone was reached in less than a month since the signature collection began on July 26. Meanwhile, the Sardinian government has legally challenged the same law, arguing that it undermines regional autonomy and violates several constitutional principles.
The Sardinian executive claims the law breaches Article 116, paragraph 3 of the Constitution, and fails to ensure adequate regional involvement in decision-making processes.
Additionally, the law is said to infringe on the rights of regions with special statutes, like Sardinia, and could exacerbate territorial disparities.
The challenge seeks to annul the law, either partially or entirely, due to these constitutional concerns.
