Sardinia Challenges Autonomy Law

Published: 2024-08-22

The regional government of Sardinia, led by Alessandra Todde, has challenged a law passed on June 19th in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, which concerns differentiated autonomy.

The Sardinian administration argues that the law could harm regions with special statutes, like Sardinia, by increasing disparities and violating constitutional principles of solidarity and equality.

The law is said to infringe on Article 116, paragraph 3 of the Italian Constitution, and disrupts the principle of loyal cooperation between the state and regions.

The Sardinian government has filed a 55-page appeal to the Constitutional Court, seeking annulment of the law, citing its potential to exacerbate territorial inequalities.

Following Sardinia's lead, the Tuscany region has also announced plans to challenge the law, with President Eugenio Giani set to present their appeal.

Meanwhile, a campaign for a referendum to repeal the law has gathered over 500,000 signatures, reflecting widespread opposition.
