Italy Swelters as Heatwave 'Caronte' Intensifies

Published: 2024-07-17

Italy is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave as the African anticyclone 'Caronte' tightens its grip on the country.

Temperatures are expected to soar above 40°C (104°F) in many cities, with Rome and Florence reaching 37°C (98.6°F) and southern regions like Puglia and Sicily hitting 39-40°C (102-104°F).

The heat is accompanied by high humidity, causing significant discomfort.

While the entire country faces scorching temperatures, the North may see some relief by the weekend.

Meteorologists predict possible thunderstorms in the Alpine regions, particularly in the Northeast, starting Friday.

Despite this, the heatwave is expected to persist in most of Italy, potentially making 2024 the hottest summer on record.
