Italy's Chamber of Deputies has approved new measures to combat violence against healthcare professionals, with 144 votes in favor and 92 abstentions.
The legislation mandates immediate arrest for those caught assaulting medical staff and damaging healthcare property.
This move comes in response to increasing attacks, such as a recent incident in Lamezia Terme where a hospital chief was assaulted.
Guido Quici, President of the Federation Cimo-Fesmed, emphasized the need for additional resources for training and security measures, which the law does not currently provide.
While some lawmakers see the law as a necessary deterrent, others, like Silvio Lai of the Democratic Party, criticize it as insufficient without broader healthcare reforms and increased funding.
The debate highlights the urgent need to protect healthcare workers while addressing systemic issues within Italy's public health system.
