Italy Faces Scorching August Heat

Published: 2024-08-02

Italy is bracing for a scorching August as the African anticyclone continues to dominate the weather, bringing prolonged heat and high humidity.

Meteorologists predict temperatures will soar 3-8 degrees above average, especially in central and southern regions, with peaks reaching up to 44°C in parts of Sicily and Sardinia.

While the first few days of August may see thunderstorms in the north, the heat will quickly return, leading to tropical nights where temperatures remain above 20°C.

Severe thunderstorms, known as supercells, are expected to develop, bringing intense hail and strong winds.

This pattern of extreme heat followed by violent storms is becoming increasingly common, reflecting a shift in Italy's climate.

As summer progresses, the anticipated break from the heat may only be temporary, with the African heat likely to return shortly after any brief respite.
