Italy Faces Return of Extreme Heat

Published: 2024-07-25

Italy is bracing for a return of extreme heat as the African high-pressure system, known as Caronte, is set to dominate the weather by the weekend.

Meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici from iLMeteo.

it warns that temperatures could soar to 39-40°C in southern regions and central cities like Rome, Florence, and Terni by early next week.

This follows a brief respite with milder temperatures, reaching only 34-35°C, due to a normal high-pressure system.

However, the situation is exacerbated by severe drought conditions, particularly in southern Italy, where rainfall has been minimal.

The upcoming heatwave is expected to last at least until August 10, with tropical nights predicted in several cities, raising concerns about the ongoing impact of climate change on weather patterns in the region.
