In response to growing international security concerns, Italy's Ministry of the Interior has issued a directive banning the use of key boxes for short-term rental accommodations.
This move aims to enhance public safety by requiring in-person guest check-ins, thereby preventing potential misuse by individuals linked to criminal or terrorist activities.
The directive, signed by Police Chief Vittorio Pisani, emphasizes the need for stringent measures ahead of major events like the Jubilee and the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.
The decision has sparked debate among rental operators, particularly in regions like Veneto and Liguria, where key boxes have become widespread.
While some industry representatives welcome the clarity, others argue that the ban could complicate operations, especially in properties without 24-hour reception services.
