The Italian government is facing criticism for spending nearly 9 million euros annually to house 295 police officers in luxury resorts in Albania.
These officers are stationed to oversee two migrant centers in Shengjin and Gjader, which are currently empty.
The accommodations include four and five-star hotels with private beaches and wellness facilities, costing 80 euros per officer per day.
This expenditure has sparked outrage among some political figures and police unions, who argue that the funds should instead be used to increase police salaries and improve working conditions.
Critics, including members of the M5S party, have labeled the operation as a misuse of public resources, calling for a reevaluation of priorities.
Meanwhile, the disparity in living conditions between these officers and those in the Italian penitentiary system has further fueled the debate.
