Italy has launched a controversial plan to process migrants in Albania, aiming to accelerate asylum procedures.
The initiative, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, involves transferring migrants from "safe" countries to centers in Albania, where their asylum requests will be processed within four weeks.
If approved, they will be relocated to Italy; otherwise, they will be sent back to their home countries.
This plan, however, faces criticism over its high costs and legal concerns.
Critics argue that the operation, costing nearly a billion euros, could have been more efficiently managed within Italy.
Additionally, the European Court of Justice questions the list of "safe" countries, as many do not meet the required human rights standards.
The plan's effectiveness in deterring migration remains uncertain, with opposition leaders calling for resources to be redirected to domestic needs like healthcare.
