Luca Scatà, a police officer from the Sesto San Giovanni Commissariat, has passed away at the age of 35 after battling an incurable illness.
He is remembered for his heroic actions on December 23, 2016, when he fatally shot Anis Amri, the terrorist responsible for the Berlin Christmas market attack that killed 12 people.
Scatà and his partner, Cristian Movio, confronted Amri during a routine check in Piazza I Maggio, where Amri opened fire first, injuring Movio.
Scatà's quick response saved lives and led to the capture of the fugitive.
In recognition of their bravery, both officers were awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Valor by the President of Italy in April 2017. Scatà's legacy will forever be linked to that fateful night in Sesto San Giovanni.
