Two brave firefighters, Giuseppe Martino and Nicola Lasalata, both 45 years old from Matera, lost their lives while attempting to save a family trapped in a burning farmhouse in Nova Siri, Italy.
The firefighters fell into a ravine near the house in the Cozzuolo area while battling intense heat and thick smoke.
They were trying to rescue a family believed to include a disabled person.
The tragedy occurred during a vegetation fire in the Matera province.
Italian officials, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella, expressed deep sorrow and conveyed condolences to the families and the Fire Department.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by firefighters and the importance of fire prevention.
