Strong Earthquake Hits Campi Flegrei Area

Published: 2024-07-26

A strong earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck the Campi Flegrei area at 1:46 PM, causing panic among residents in Bacoli, Pozzuoli, and various neighborhoods in western Naples.

The quake, with an epicenter in the Gulf of Pozzuoli at a depth of 4 kilometers, is part of an ongoing seismic swarm linked to bradisism, a phenomenon involving ground uplift and subsidence due to volcanic activity.

Although no injuries were reported, a landslide occurred in Bacoli, prompting the evacuation of a nearby beach.

Public transport services, including metro and train lines, were temporarily suspended for safety checks.

Local authorities are on high alert as they monitor the situation, with a significant evacuation drill planned for October.
