Strong Earthquake Shakes Naples, Raising Concerns

Published: 2024-07-18

A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei area near Naples, Italy, at 8:08 AM today, causing alarm among residents.

The tremor, with its epicenter in the Solfatara-Pisciarelli zone at a depth of 2.4 kilometers, was felt across Naples and surrounding areas.

Mauro Di Vito, director of the Vesuvian Observatory, stated that such events are expected due to ongoing bradyseismic activity, with ground uplift continuing at about 20 millimeters per month.

While no damage has been reported, the quake has reignited fears among locals who have experienced increased seismic activity in recent months.

The Italian government has appointed Fulvio Maria Soccodato as special commissioner to oversee public interventions in the Campi Flegrei area, highlighting the growing concern over the region's volcanic activity.
