Milano Bans Outdoor Smoking

Published: 2024-12-26

Starting January 1, Milan will enforce a strict ban on smoking in all public outdoor spaces, except in isolated areas where a 10-meter distance from others can be maintained.

This move, part of the city's "Piano Aria Clima," aims to combat passive smoking and reduce pollution.

The ban extends the 2021 restrictions and aligns with the legacy of the 2005 "Sirchia Law," which prohibited indoor smoking.

Critics, including former Health Minister Girolamo Sirchia, applaud the initiative but question its enforcement, citing past challenges with compliance.

Experts highlight the health and environmental benefits, noting that cigarette smoke contributes significantly to urban pollution.

However, the exclusion of e-cigarettes from the ban has sparked debate, with concerns over their health impacts.

Violators face fines ranging from €40 to €240, but effective enforcement remains key to the policy's success.
