The bear known as Kj1 was killed in Trentino, Italy, following a decree by the provincial president, Maurizio Fugatti.
Kj1 was classified as a dangerous animal, having been involved in at least seven incidents with humans, the latest occurring on July 16. The decision to cull the bear has sparked controversy, with Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin stating that killing individual bears is not a viable solution to the problem.
He emphasized the need for alternative measures, such as sterilization, and called for better public information and coordinated actions with local authorities.
This incident marks a troubling moment in the ongoing debate over wildlife management in the region, as Kj1 becomes the 62nd bear reported killed in Italy over the past 23 years.
