The Italian Navy ship Libra arrived in Shengjin, Albania, on Wednesday, carrying 16 migrants as part of a new agreement between Italy and Albania.
This initiative, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, aims to test accelerated border procedures in a third country.
The migrants, who had hoped to reach Italy, were instead processed in Albania, sparking criticism from activists who view the agreement as a form of neo-colonialism.
Despite the controversy, the Dutch Foreign Minister expressed interest in the model, highlighting its potential for managing migration flows.
The migrants are now housed in a facility in Gjader, Albania, where they will undergo further processing.
