Italian Beach Protest Set for August 9

Published: 2024-08-07

On August 9, beach establishments across Italy will delay their opening by two hours in protest against the government's inaction regarding beach concessions.

This strike, organized by the Italian Beach Syndicate, aims to draw attention to the looming chaos as concession agreements expire at the end of 2024. Antonio Capacchione, the syndicate's president, expressed frustration over the government's lack of response to their requests for dialogue.

Meanwhile, the European Union has been pressing Italy to comply with regulations requiring competitive bidding for beach concessions.

In response to the planned strike, some politicians have suggested that the beaches should be free on that day, while others criticize the protest as a hindrance to public access.

The situation remains tense as the government prepares to address the issue in September, but uncertainty looms for the 30,000 businesses affected.
