Heatwave Grips Italy: Temperatures Soar Above Seasonal Norms

Published: 2024-07-20

Italy is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring up to 8 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages in some regions.

The African anticyclone 'Caronte' has pushed temperatures beyond 35-37°C in central and southern Italy, and up to 36°C in the north.

The Ministry of Health has issued red alert warnings for 17 cities, indicating extreme heat risk.

Meteorologists warn that the heat, combined with high humidity, is creating unbearable conditions, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children.

The Mediterranean Sea is also affected, with water temperatures 8 degrees higher than normal, potentially impacting marine ecosystems.

While some relief is expected by Sunday with cooler air from Northern Europe, the heatwave's intensity and duration are seen as clear signs of climate change impacts.
