In a dramatic courtroom moment, former Red Brigades member Lauro Azzolini admitted his presence at the deadly 1975 shootout at Cascina Spiotta, which claimed the lives of Carabinieri officer Giovanni D’Alfonso and Mara Cagol.

Speaking during a trial in Alessandria, Azzolini recounted the chaotic events, describing his escape and the tragic death of Cagol, who he claimed surrendered before being shot.

The trial also implicates former Red Brigades leaders Renato Curcio and Mario Moretti.

Bruno D’Alfonso, son of the slain officer, attended the hearing but avoided eye contact with Azzolini, stating the experience was deeply painful.

While Azzolini’s testimony sheds light on the events, many questions remain unanswered, leaving the victims’ families still searching for closure.
