Etna Erupts Again: Ash and Lava Fountains

Published: 2024-08-04

Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, has entered a spectacular eruptive phase, marking its fifth since July 4. The Voragine crater is the center of activity, producing towering lava fountains and a volcanic cloud reaching 10 kilometers high.

Ash is falling on several towns in the southeast direction, prompting the closure of part of Catania's airport and a reduction in flight arrivals to six per hour.

Local authorities are urging caution on the roads due to ash accumulation, which is exacerbating drought conditions in the region.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology has issued a red alert for aviation due to the volcanic activity, which has seen a significant increase in tremor levels.

Experts warn that the ongoing eruptions indicate deeper magma movements beneath the surface, suggesting a dynamic and evolving situation.
