Etna Eruption Disrupts Catania

Published: 2024-08-15

Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, has erupted once again, causing significant disruptions in Catania, Sicily.

The eruption, characterized by a towering 9.5-kilometer ash plume, led to the temporary closure of Catania's Vincenzo Bellini Airport, with flights being redirected to Palermo.

The volcanic ash has blanketed the city, prompting the mayor, Enrico Trantino, to impose a 30 km/h speed limit and a temporary ban on two-wheeled vehicles to ensure public safety.

Local authorities are grappling with the cleanup, as the ashfall has impacted transportation and agriculture, leading some mayors to request disaster status due to insufficient funds for cleanup efforts.

The ongoing volcanic activity, monitored by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, highlights the persistent challenges posed by Etna's eruptions, which have been intensifying since mid-June.

Despite the cessation of the lava fountain, minor explosive activity continues at the Voragine crater, keeping the region on alert.
