Yacht Incidents Surge in Costa Smeralda

Published: 2024-08-12

In recent days, the picturesque waters of Costa Smeralda have witnessed a series of alarming incidents involving luxury yachts.

A 47-meter yacht named Atina caught fire and sank off the coast of Pittulongu, Olbia, highlighting the growing concerns over maritime safety in the region.

The high density of yacht traffic, particularly during the summer months, has led to increased accidents, as noted by the local Coast Guard.

The trend of renting mega yachts has surged, contributing to the congestion and raising safety issues, especially with vessels between 10 to 15 meters that often lack proper maintenance.

Despite the dramatic incidents, such as the Atina's fire, no injuries have been reported, and environmental damage has been minimal.

Authorities are working swiftly to remove the sunken yacht and address the safety challenges posed by the booming yacht rental industry.
