US Tariffs Threaten Italian Cheese Exports

The United States, a key market for Italy's Parmigiano Reggiano, is considering new tariffs that could raise prices by 25%.

This would add to the existing 15% tariff, bringing the total to 40%.

Currently, Parmigiano Reggiano costs around €44 per kilo in the U.

S., but the new tariffs could push it to €55. Despite these challenges, American demand for the cheese remains strong, with the U.

S. accounting for 22.5% of its exports.

Producers are concerned about the impact on prices and the rise of imitation products, which already cost Italy billions annually.

The industry hopes for a negotiated solution to avoid further strain on this iconic export.
