UNIFIL's Struggles in Lebanon

Published: 2024-10-10

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) faces significant challenges in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Despite its presence since 1978, UNIFIL has struggled to assist Lebanese forces in regaining control over southern Lebanon, an area historically influenced by Israel and Hezbollah.

Recent tensions have escalated with Israel's limited incursions into Lebanon, reminiscent of past invasions.

The mission's inability to prevent these actions raises questions about its effectiveness.

Meanwhile, Israel's deliberate attacks on UNIFIL bases, injuring peacekeepers and damaging facilities, have drawn international condemnation, particularly from Italy, which contributes a large contingent to the mission.

The situation remains tense, with calls for UNIFIL's withdrawal amid concerns over its role and impact.
