Toti Under House Arrest: Opposition Calls for Resignation

Published: 2024-07-19

Giovanni Toti, the governor of Liguria, Italy, has been placed under house arrest for a second time.

The new charge involves violating party financing laws, specifically related to a €50,000 payment from Esselunga supermarket chain for advertising during the 2022 municipal elections.

This follows his previous arrest on May 7th for corruption charges.

In response, opposition parties held a demonstration in Genoa's Piazza De Ferrari, demanding Toti's resignation.

Leaders from the Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, and other left-wing parties united on stage, calling for new regional elections.

They argue that these serious allegations are paralyzing the region and creating uncertainty for economic operators.

The opposition criticizes Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for not asking Toti to step down, while Toti's meeting with Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini may be in jeopardy due to the new charges.
