Schlein Slams Government's Healthcare Decree

Published: 2024-07-24

In a heated session at the Italian Parliament, Elly Schlein, the leader of the Democratic Party (PD), fiercely criticized the government's recent "Waiting Lists" decree, labeling it as ineffective and a mere political stunt.

Schlein argued that the decree fails to address the pressing issues of Italy's public healthcare system, which is plagued by long waiting lists and a shortage of medical staff.

She highlighted that the government has not allocated additional funds to improve healthcare services, instead planning to cut existing resources by 160 million euros next year.

Schlein warned that the government's approach would favor private healthcare, leaving many citizens unable to afford necessary treatments.

She called for urgent reforms to enhance working conditions for healthcare professionals and to ensure equitable access to medical care for all Italians.

The decree was ultimately approved in the Chamber of Deputies, but opposition parties continue to rally against it, emphasizing the need for a more robust public health strategy.
