The Campi Flegrei volcanic area in Italy is experiencing unprecedented seismic and ground uplift activity, raising concerns among scientists.
Since September 2023, the ground has risen 40 cm above the previous record set in the 1980s, with monthly increases of over 1 cm.
This phenomenon, known as bradyseism, is linked to frequent earthquakes, some exceeding a magnitude of 3.9. Experts warn that further uplift could trigger even stronger quakes, potentially reaching magnitude 5.0, which could cause significant damage due to their shallow depth.
Historical data and recent studies suggest magma may be rising closer to the surface, increasing the risk of eruptions.
Authorities are urged to enhance monitoring and prepare for potential evacuations to mitigate risks in this densely populated region.
