Campi Flegrei's Rising Threat

Published: 2025-03-01

The Campi Flegrei caldera near Naples, home to 500,000 people, is experiencing significant volcanic unrest.

Since 2012, the alert level has been raised due to increased seismic activity, gas emissions, and ground uplift.

The ground has risen over 40 cm beyond the 1984 record, with emissions of carbon dioxide and sulfur gases reaching alarming levels.

Authorities have implemented emergency plans, including evacuation zones and safety measures for CO2 accumulation in underground spaces.

Over 1,500 residents have already been displaced.

Experts warn that these signs could indicate magma movement, urging vigilance and preparedness.
