Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has voiced her criticism of the Ventotene Manifesto, a 1941 document advocating for a federalist and socialist Europe.
Written by Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi during their confinement under fascist rule, the manifesto called for a united Europe to prevent future wars and totalitarian regimes.
Meloni focused on parts of the text discussing a "revolutionary party" and "dictatorship," but critics argue her interpretation overlooks the manifesto's historical context and evolution.
Spinelli later revised these ideas, emphasizing a broad, anti-fascist movement for European unity.
While the manifesto's vision remains influential, its socialist leanings have sparked debate, particularly from nationalist and conservative perspectives.
The document is seen as a foundational step toward European integration, despite its acknowledged limitations.
