Mediterranean Leaders Condemn Israeli Attacks

Published: 2024-10-11

At the Med9 summit in Cyprus, leaders from Italy, France, and Spain united to condemn recent Israeli military actions against UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.

The joint declaration, signed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, labeled the attacks as "unjustifiable" and a "grave violation" of UN resolutions.

While Macron and Sánchez urged the international community to halt arms sales to Israel, Meloni took a more cautious stance, reflecting Italy's decision to freeze arms supplies post-October 2023. The leaders called for an immediate ceasefire and protection for the UN contingent, which includes 1,200 Italian soldiers.

The summit highlighted growing concerns over Middle Eastern tensions, with Jordan's King Abdullah II emphasizing the potential for regional conflict escalation.
