A controversial security bill in Italy has sparked a heated debate between the Senate and the Council of Europe.
The bill, already approved by the lower house, faces criticism for potentially violating human rights.
Michael O’Flaherty, the Council’s human rights commissioner, urged senators to reject the bill unless it is significantly revised, citing concerns over vague definitions and restrictions on peaceful protests.
Senate President Ignazio La Russa dismissed the letter as an "unacceptable interference" in Italy’s legislative process.
Opposition parties and civil society groups have echoed O’Flaherty’s concerns, with protests erupting in Rome.
The bill remains under review, with calls for amendments to align it with democratic principles.
