Italian Senate Approves Controversial Migration Decree

Published: 2024-12-04

The Italian Senate has approved a controversial migration decree with 99 votes in favor, 65 against, and one abstention.

This decree, which had already passed the Chamber of Deputies, introduces significant changes to the handling of migration issues.

It designates certain countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, and Morocco as 'safe,' and shifts the responsibility for validating asylum seekers' detention from specialized tribunals to the Courts of Appeal.

This move has been criticized by the CSM, Italy's judicial council, for potentially overburdening the courts and involving judges lacking specific expertise.

Humanitarian organizations have also voiced strong opposition, arguing that the decree aims to hinder their rescue operations in the Mediterranean.

Despite these criticisms, the decree is now set to become law, marking a significant shift in Italy's migration policy.
