Gender Balance Challenge in EU Commission

Published: 2024-08-27

The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, faces challenges in achieving gender balance as the deadline for nominating commissioners approaches.

Currently, 16 out of 27 nominated candidates are men, making it difficult to replicate the gender parity seen in 2019. Von der Leyen is using her influence to encourage EU countries to nominate more women, but lacks legal power to enforce this.

Some countries, like Italy and Belgium, have yet to finalize their nominations, with potential for female candidates.

The final composition of the Commission will be crucial, as it reflects the EU's commitment to gender equality.

The process includes interviews and parliamentary hearings, where some candidates may be rejected, potentially opening opportunities for more women.
