The violin spider, scientifically known as Loxosceles rufescens, has become a growing concern in Italian homes and gardens.
This small, yellowish-brown arachnid, named for its violin-shaped marking, is one of the most venomous spiders in Italy.
Its bite, initially painless, can lead to severe tissue necrosis within 48-72 hours.
In rare cases, it can cause systemic reactions and even be fatal, as tragically demonstrated by the recent death of a 52-year-old police officer in Palermo.
Experts advise caution, especially in northern regions where the spider seeks shelter indoors during colder months.
If bitten, immediate medical attention is crucial, and capturing the spider, if possible, can aid in identification and treatment.
