Cultural Ministry's Chief Resigns Amid Controversy

Published: 2024-10-23

Francesco Spano, the chief of staff at Italy's Ministry of Culture, has resigned following a series of controversies.

Spano's decision came after a report suggested potential conflicts of interest involving his husband, Marco Carnabuci, who was hired by the Maxxi museum during Spano's tenure as secretary-general.

The situation has been further complicated by internal party tensions, with some members of the Fratelli d’Italia expressing dissatisfaction over Spano's appointment due to his past involvement with LGBTQ+ organizations.

The controversy has also led to the resignation of Fabrizio Busnengo, a party coordinator, after making homophobic remarks about Spano.

Minister Alessandro Giuli, who appointed Spano, has defended him, citing his technical expertise.

However, the mounting pressure and public scrutiny have ultimately led to Spano's resignation.
