In a significant political upheaval, the mayor of Vigevano, Andrea Ceffa, has been placed under house arrest on charges of corruption.
This follows an investigation by the Pavia Prosecutor's Office, which also led to the arrest of a city councilor and three executives from the municipal company Asm Vigevano.
The investigation, which began in November 2022, uncovered attempts to destabilize the local government through bribery, including a proposed payment of €15,000 to a councilor for participating in a mass resignation.
Despite these efforts being thwarted, Ceffa allegedly secured political support by arranging a consultancy for a councilor, Roberta Giacometti, through Asm Vigevano, which was deemed unnecessary.
The case has drawn national attention, with Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini expressing support for Ceffa, asserting his belief in the mayor's integrity and innocence.
