In a tragic incident, 19-year-old skier Matilde Lorenzi from Valgioie, Italy, lost her life while pursuing her passion for skiing.
Despite wearing a helmet, Lorenzi suffered a severe cranio-facial trauma during a fall, highlighting the limitations of current safety equipment in high-speed sports.
Professor Bruno Andrea Pesucci, a maxillofacial surgery expert, explained that while helmets can protect the head, they are not foolproof against violent impacts that affect the face and brain.
He emphasized the need for improved safety measures and rule changes in sports to reduce risks, as current technology cannot fully prevent such accidents.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing performance and safety in competitive sports.
