The proposed increase in the tourist tax in Italy has sparked significant backlash from the hospitality sector.
Costanzo Iaccarino, president of Federalberghi Campania, warns that raising the tax will make Italian tourist destinations less competitive, particularly in Campania.
The new regulation could extend the tax to all 7,904 municipalities, with rates varying based on accommodation costs, potentially reaching up to 25 euros per night in luxury hotels.
Critics argue that the tax revenue, which may now also fund waste management, strays from its original purpose of supporting tourism.
Federalberghi and Confindustria Alberghi have called for the government to reconsider, emphasizing the need for financial support for the tourism industry rather than imposing additional burdens.
