In a significant development in the Liguria corruption investigation, former governor Giovanni Toti has reached a plea deal with the Genoa Prosecutor's Office.
Toti agreed to a sentence of two years and one month, which will be served through 1,500 hours of community service and the confiscation of €84,100. This agreement, pending approval by the preliminary hearing judge, allows Toti to avoid a trial scheduled for November 5. The charges involve improper corruption and illegal party financing.
Alongside Toti, former Genoa Port Authority president Paolo Signorini has also agreed to a plea deal, receiving a sentence of three years and five months.
The case has stirred political tensions, highlighting the need for clearer regulations on party financing.
