A severe thunderstorm hit Bologna and the surrounding region late in the afternoon, bringing a much-anticipated break from the heat.
The storm caused strong winds, lightning, hail, and heavy rain, leading to significant disruptions.
At Bologna's Marconi Airport, several flights were delayed, and reports of fallen trees and damaged vehicles emerged.
The southern ring road was closed between exits 3 and 5 due to flooding, with two cars stranded before exit 5. In Reggio Emilia, a mini tornado lifted outdoor furniture and bicycles, with a large tree falling on a parked car on Via Adua, blocking the road in both directions.
Additional tree falls were reported near the university and along the Crostolo riverwalk.
