Rising Calls Highlight Violence Crisis

Published: 2024-11-25

In 2024, Italy's anti-violence hotline 1522 received 48,000 contacts from January to September, marking a 57% increase from the same period in 2023. This surge reflects a growing awareness and willingness among women to seek help, as emphasized by Family and Equal Opportunities Minister Eugenia Roccella.

Despite a slight decrease in femicides, violence against women remains a critical issue, with 98 women killed this year, mostly by partners or family members.

The government continues to promote support measures, including financial aid for victims, while urging cultural shifts to combat gender stereotypes.

President Sergio Mattarella has called for more decisive actions to protect women's rights and ensure their safety.
