Meloni Defends 'Assegno Unico' Amidst Rumors

Published: 2024-08-31

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has firmly stated that her government does not intend to abolish the 'assegno unico,' a financial support measure for families, despite rumors suggesting otherwise.

In a video with Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, Meloni emphasized that extending this benefit to immigrant workers could undermine its sustainability.

The government is currently drafting the new budget law, and Meloni urged the public to disregard speculative reports about potential changes.

The 'assegno unico' was introduced under the previous government led by Mario Draghi, and former Family Minister Elena Bonetti highlighted its positive impact on the country.

The European Union had previously criticized Italy for imposing a two-year residency requirement for immigrants to access the benefit, prompting potential revisions to the policy.

The government may consider adjustments to support larger families, aligning with its pro-natality stance.
