Italian President Sergio Mattarella, during his official visit to Montenegro, emphasized the importance of respecting international law and state sovereignty.
Speaking alongside Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic, Mattarella reiterated Italy's unwavering support for Ukraine, highlighting the need for a just and lasting peace.
He recalled Ukraine's decision in the 1990s to relinquish its nuclear arsenal in exchange for guarantees of independence and territorial integrity, urging a return to such commitments.
Mattarella also expressed hope for Russia to rejoin the international community under these principles.
Additionally, he reaffirmed Italy's strong backing for Montenegro's EU membership, praising its progress on reforms and pledging further assistance.
