Marzabotto Massacre: 80 Years of Remembrance

Published: 2024-09-29

The 80th anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre, a tragic event during World War II, is being commemorated in Italy.

Between September 29 and October 5, 1944, Nazi troops led by Major Walter Reder killed 770 civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, in the villages of Marzabotto, Grizzana Morandi, and Monzuno.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier are attending the ceremonies to honor the victims.

The event serves as a solemn reminder of the brutality of war and the importance of preserving historical memory.

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi will lead a mass in remembrance, emphasizing the need to reflect on how such atrocities could occur.

The presence of both Italian and German leaders highlights a commitment to reconciliation and the enduring impact of history on present-day relations.
