Leaders Unite Against Past Atrocities

Published: 2024-09-29

In a poignant ceremony at Marzabotto, Italian President Sergio Mattarella and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier commemorated the victims of one of the most brutal Nazi massacres during World War II.

The event, marked by solemn speeches and heartfelt apologies, underscored a shared commitment to remember the past and prevent the resurgence of fascism and Nazism.

Steinmeier, expressing deep remorse, asked for forgiveness on behalf of Germany, acknowledging the pain and shame associated with the atrocities.

Survivors and their families, including Franco Lanzarini, who vividly recalled the horrors of being lined up for execution, attended the ceremony.

The leaders' presence and words served as a powerful reminder of the enduring need to combat racism, antisemitism, and aggressive nationalism.
